GERMANY

Germany’s rich and deep history, as one of the most influential countries in the world, has shaped its reputation and established institutions in the modern age and boasts of its advancement in many different areas. Currently, it is Europe’s largest economy and is considered to be one of the world’s greatest powers, supporting a population of over 83 million. As a developed country, Germany affords its citizens access to public healthcare and quality education; it is no surprise that the education system in Germany is of notable high quality.

German students are reported to be some of the highest-performing students in the world, and many international students select Germany for higher education to further their studies. Most of the schools in Germany are run by the state and remain free to the public, allowing accessible and affordable education for all students; private institutions, if chosen by the parents, are only a fraction of the price of private schools in other countries. Education is compulsory up until age 18, after which students are allowed to choose if they desire to pursue higher education.

What makes Germany’s education system unique and robust is its focus on all stages of life; not only do they have education systems for all stages of life, but the curriculum tailors to the students’ interests from an early age. Unlike other countries, Germany’s education is built on a five-tier system: early childhood education, primary education, secondary education, tertiary education, and continuing education. Students begin learning foundational knowledge and skills at all stages and starting from just the secondary education level, schools introduce lessons that steer students towards vocational skill sets, allowing them to choose between general education classes and work-study opportunities. Tertiary education prepares students for careers with further vocational training, equivalent to a university degree.

As it is plain to see, Germany’s level of quality education is achieved through the political and economic stability that has been established by centuries of evolution and reform within the country. Because it can provide its citizens with basic needs and government-funded entities, the people have the means and ability to attend school and achieve high academic standing in the world.
